About This Walk
A one-mile circular walk around the Saxon earthwork walls that ring Wareham on three sides — one of the most accessible pieces of ancient history in Dorset, free, level (the walks run along the tops of the banks), and entirely appropriate for children, pushchairs, and dogs. The walls were built by Alfred the Great in the 9th century and remain in remarkable condition as grassy banks. The view from the south wall across the River Frome meadows is peaceful and lovely. This is the kind of walk that rewards those who take it slowly — the history is in the ground beneath your feet, and the town that grew up inside these walls has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years.

Sniffari Rating
Why not 5 paws? A short but genuinely lovely walk — great for a quick off-lead explore with history on every side. The route is only 1.5–2 miles, which limits the adventure for dogs wanting a longer run. Road crossings require leads at several points.
