About This Walk

Thorncombe Wood is the literary heart of Dorset's woodland — a 26-hectare mixed wood and heathland site immediately beside Thomas Hardy's birthplace at Higher Bockhampton, managed by the National Trust with well-marked trails, a dog-friendly café at the visitor centre, and a newly installed dog wash. The walks range from the 0.9-mile Hardy's Birthplace loop to longer routes incorporating Black Heath, the birch and bracken heathland above the wood, and the transition into Puddletown Forest beyond. Puddletown Forest itself — a large Forestry England woodland to the north-east, threaded with well-maintained trails through heathland and wooded areas — connects directly to Thorncombe Wood and extends the walk significantly. The Rhododendron Mile within Puddletown Forest is one of the county's great seasonal spectacles in May: a long avenue of rhododendrons in full bloom, a colour that has no business being in an English forest and is all the more extraordinary for it. Henry regards Puddletown Forest as one of the finest smelling places in Dorset. His assessment is considered and well-researched.

Dog Alerts

Paw Protection

Well-maintained woodland paths. Gentle on paws. Heathland sections can be dry and sandy in summer.

Lead Guidance

Dogs welcome off-lead throughout most of the forest. Leads near livestock and in National Trust cottage grounds. The heathland areas (Black Heath) have free-grazing Dartmoor ponies and cattle — leads near these animals. Cycle trails share some paths — keep dogs in sight on shared routes.

Livestock & Wildlife

No livestock in the woodland. Heathland sections: leads 1 March–31 July (nesting birds). If you are ever approached or chased by cattle, release your dog's lead immediately so you can both move to safety independently. This is standard safety advice from Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.

Stiles & Gates

No stiles on the main woodland trails.

Seasonal Intelligence

The Rhododendron Mile in Puddletown Forest is spectacular in May — a long avenue of rhododendrons in full bloom. Spring brings bluebells in the woodland. Summer: leads on heathland sections. The dog wash at the visitor centre is a welcome addition after muddy winter walks.

Dog-Specific Tips

Dog-friendly café at the visitor centre — water bowl outside. Newly installed dog wash on site. Hardy's Cottage (NT ticketed) is adjacent — dogs welcome in the grounds. The Rusty Duck woodland café in Puddletown Forest is dog-friendly outside.
