About This Walk

Two adjacent downland sites managed by the National Trust on the chalk escarpment south of Shaftesbury — open, flower-rich, and spectacular in views. Fontmell Down has a reputation as one of the finest chalk grassland sites for butterflies in the south of England; the late summer population of chalkhill blue, silver-spotted skipper, and small blue is extraordinary. Melbury Down, slightly higher, gives views across the Blackmore Vale that take in Shaftesbury on its ridge and the downland rolling away in every direction. Parking for approximately 10 cars, lovely views, and excellent dog-walking with the National Trust management keeping the grassland in superb condition.

Dog Alerts

Paw Protection

Chalk grassland. Gentle on paws. Can be dry and dusty in summer.

Lead Guidance

A specific marked circular route allows off-lead walking — dogs must be on a short lead (max 2m) everywhere else. Cattle and sheep graze year-round: leads required near livestock. On Open Access land, leads legally required 1 March–31 July (ground-nesting birds). The Fontmell pub in Fontmell Magna is a highly rated dog-friendly stop after the walk.

Livestock & Wildlife

Leads on leads during spring/summer grazing season. Free in autumn and winter. If you are ever approached or chased by cattle, release your dog's lead immediately so you can both move to safety independently. This is standard safety advice from Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.

Dog-Specific Tips

Small free car park. The views from Melbury Down across the Blackmore Vale are among the best in north Dorset. No facilities on site — carry water. Best visited in autumn when livestock are off and the views are clear.
