About This Walk

Avon Heath Country Park is a mixture of glorious heathland and woods, awarded a Green Flag. At 580 acres, it offers a range of walking trails through heathland and woodland, a visitor centre with interactive wildlife exhibits, a café beside the play area with indoor and outdoor seating, and designated off-lead areas for dogs. The Short Wander (1.5km, suitable for pushchairs) and the Viewpoint Trail (3km, with modest climbs to a clifftop-style viewpoint over the heathland) are the primary signed routes. The park also has an excellent children's play area, barbecue hire, a wildlife pond, a bird hide, and seasonal events. For families, Avon Heath is one of the most comprehensively provided outdoor spaces in east Dorset.

Paw Protection

Well-maintained heathland paths. Gentle on paws.

Lead Guidance

1 March–31 July: all dogs on short leads (max 2m) across most of the park. Designated off-lead areas at South Park (Boundary Lane) during this period — look for signs. Outside the nesting season: off-lead in most areas. Leads always required in car parks and near the children's play area. British White cattle graze the site — leads near livestock.

Livestock & Wildlife

No livestock. Off-lead areas designated. If you are ever approached or chased by cattle, release your dog's lead immediately so you can both move to safety independently. This is standard safety advice from Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.

Stiles & Gates

No stiles on the main trails.

Sniffari Rating

4/5

Why not 5 paws? Seasonal short lead policy applies 1 March–31 July across most of the park to protect ground-nesting birds (Nightjar, Dartford Warbler) and breeding reptiles. Off-lead areas are available at South Park during this period. British White cattle graze the site — leads near livestock.
