The South Dorset Ridgeway
Osmington to Abbotsbury: ancient chalk ridge above the coast
About This Trail
The South Dorset Ridgeway follows the chalk escarpment above the coast from Osmington (east of Weymouth) to Abbotsbury (west of Weymouth) — approximately 10 miles of open chalk downland with continuous views to the coast and the Fleet Lagoon below. The route passes the Hardy Monument (the obelisk commemorating Vice-Admiral Hardy, Nelson's flag captain at Trafalgar, not Thomas Hardy the novelist) on Blackdown Hill — the highest point on the South Dorset Ridgeway at 237 metres. The views from the monument take in Portland Bill, Chesil Beach, the Fleet, and on clear days the Isle of Wight. The ridge is an ancient trackway — the South Dorset Ridgeway has been used since the Bronze Age and is lined with barrows and earthworks throughout.
🐾 Dog Notes
Dogs welcome throughout. Leads near livestock (frequent on chalk downland). The ridge is exposed in wind — plan accordingly.
Dog Alerts
Lead Policy
Off lead on open ridge where safe. Lead required near livestock and on the descent to the coast where cliff edges are present.
Livestock
Sheep graze the ridge throughout the year. Cattle in some valley fields. Keep on lead when livestock are visible.
Paw Protection
Chalk and flint paths on the ridge. Flint can be sharp in dry conditions — check paws at the end of the walk. The descent to the coast is grassy and easy on paws.
Stiles & Gates
Mostly open footpaths and kissing gates. A few traditional stiles near the coastal end — manageable for most dogs.
Seasonal Intel
Apr–Jun
Wildflowers and orchids on the chalk. Lambing season — leads near sheep. Long clear views.
Jul–Sep
Warm and dry. Excellent visibility. The descent to the coast offers swimming at the end.
Oct–Mar
Dramatic winter light on the ridge. Quiet paths. Some sections can be muddy after rain.
Dog-Specific Tips
- 🐾The ridge is one of the most ancient trackways in Britain — your dog is walking in the footsteps of Bronze Age farmers.
- 🐾The descent to the coast near Osmington Mills offers a rewarding swim at the end.
- 🐾Carry water — the exposed ridge has no water sources.
- 🐾The Hardy Monument is a useful landmark and meeting point if walking with others.
