About This Trail

The Purbeck Way is a 15-mile waymarked trail from Wareham to Swanage, crossing the Isle of Purbeck via Corfe Castle and the Purbeck Ridge. It is one of the most varied short long-distance trails in the south of England, combining river valley, heath, ridge, and coastal sections in a single route. The trail passes through Wareham (Saxon town walls), Stoborough, Corfe Castle (the ruined Norman fortress), the Purbeck Ridge (Nine Barrow Down, Godlingston Hill), and descends to Swanage via Ballard Down and the chalk cliffs above Old Harry Rocks. The Swanage Railway steam train back to Corfe Castle (and then a bus to Wareham) makes the return practical and enjoyable.

🐾 Dog Notes

Dogs welcome throughout. Leads on heathland sections March–July (nesting birds). Leads on cliff sections. The Swanage Railway welcomes dogs on the steam train.

Dog Alerts

Lead Policy

Off lead on open heathland where safe. Lead required near livestock and on the Studland heathland section (Mar–Jul for ground-nesting birds).

Livestock

Sheep graze the Purbeck Hills throughout the year. Cattle are present on lower valley sections in summer. Keep on lead when livestock are visible.

🐾

Paw Protection

Chalk downland paths are firm and well-drained. Some flint on the ridge sections — check paws after the higher ground. The valley sections are soft and grassy.

Stiles & Gates

Mostly kissing gates and open footpaths. A few traditional stiles on the western section near Wareham — manageable for most dogs.

Seasonal Intel

Mar–Jul

Ground-nesting birds on Studland heathland — leads required. Orchids and wildflowers on the chalk ridge.

Jun–Sep

Warm and dry. Excellent swimming at Studland Bay at the trail's end. Busy at weekends.

Oct–Feb

Quiet and atmospheric. The ridge views are exceptional on clear winter days. Paths can be muddy in the valleys.

Dog-Specific Tips

  • 🐾The trail ends at Studland Beach — a perfect reward swim for your dog after the ridge section.
  • 🐾Corfe Castle village has several dog-friendly cafes and pubs for a mid-trail stop.
  • 🐾The Purbeck Hills section has superb scent variety — heather, gorse, and chalk grassland all in one walk.
  • 🐾Carry water from Wareham — sources are limited on the ridge.
