About This Trail

The Lawrence of Arabia Trail is a 28-mile waymarked trail linking the places associated with T.E. Lawrence in his later years in Dorset — from Wareham through Bovington (where he served as a private in the Tank Corps under the assumed name Shaw), Clouds Hill (his cottage, now National Trust), and the Purbeck heathland he loved. Lawrence came to Dorset after the First World War and the Paris Peace Conference, seeking anonymity and simplicity. He found both, and the landscape of the Purbeck heathland — the same heath that Hardy described as Egdon — appears in his writing as a place of recovery and peace. He died in 1935 in a motorcycle accident on the lane near Clouds Hill; the cottage where he lived is preserved as he left it.

🐾 Dog Notes

Dogs welcome throughout. Leads on heathland sections March–July. Clouds Hill NT cottage grounds welcome dogs.

Dog Alerts

Lead Policy

Off lead on heathland and open footpaths. Lead required on lanes, near livestock, and through village sections.

Livestock

Sheep and cattle on the Purbeck farmland sections. Keep on lead when livestock are visible.

🐾

Paw Protection

Mix of heathland tracks, chalk paths, and country lanes. Heathland is soft and excellent for paws. Lane sections are tarmac — short but manageable.

Stiles & Gates

Mix of kissing gates and a few traditional stiles. The Purbeck section is mostly well-gated. Some stiles near Moreton may require assistance for larger dogs.

Seasonal Intel

Apr–Jun

Heathland wildflowers and gorse in bloom. Excellent birdwatching on the heath sections.

Jul–Sep

Heather in full purple bloom on the Purbeck heath. Warm and dry. Busy at Clouds Hill (NT).

Oct–Mar

Quiet and atmospheric. The heath is beautiful in autumn. Moreton churchyard is particularly moving in winter light.

Dog-Specific Tips

  • 🐾Clouds Hill (T.E. Lawrence's cottage, National Trust) has a dog-friendly garden — worth a stop.
  • 🐾Moreton churchyard, where Lawrence is buried, is open to dogs on leads.
  • 🐾The Bovington Tank Museum is nearby but dogs are not permitted inside — leave them with a companion or skip it.
  • 🐾The heathland sections are superb for scent — your dog will be in heaven.
  • 🐾Carry water on the heathland sections where sources are limited.
