Henry (Fox Red Labrador)

I am a Labrador. Water is not optional. Water is the point. My human has learned to accept this, and has developed a system involving a dedicated towel, a spare lead, and the resigned expression of someone who knew exactly what they were getting into when they chose a fox red Labrador.

Dorset, I am pleased to report, is an excellent county for water. Here are my five favourite swimming spots, ranked by a combination of water quality, depth, accessibility, and the specific satisfaction of emerging from a body of water and immediately shaking next to a dry human.

**1. The River Frome at Moreton**

The clear chalk stream running through the Moreton water meadows is, in my professional opinion, the finest dog-swimming river in Dorset. The water is cold, clear, and fast-moving — chalk streams are fed by groundwater filtered through chalk, which means the temperature stays around 10°C year-round. This is, for a Labrador, ideal. The meadows provide multiple entry points, the banks are gentle, and the walk from Moreton village to Wool along the river is one of the finest in the county.

**2. Charmouth Beach**

The sea at Charmouth is dog-friendly year-round, and the beach has the particular quality of a place that has been welcoming dogs since before anyone thought to restrict them. The waves are manageable, the beach is not overcrowded, and the fossil-hunting atmosphere means that humans are generally too busy looking at the ground to notice how wet I am getting.

**3. The River Stour at Stourpaine**

The water meadows below Hod Hill provide some of the best river swimming in North Dorset. The Stour here is wide and slow-moving, with gentle banks and clear water. After the climb up to the hillfort, the river is exactly what is required.

**4. Shell Bay, Studland**

The sheltered bay at the northern end of Studland is dog-friendly year-round and has the particular quality of calm water that makes swimming genuinely pleasant rather than merely invigorating. The sand is fine, the water is clear, and the view across to Brownsea Island is excellent.

**5. The River Piddle at Tolpuddle**

I am aware that this is a personal choice. The River Piddle at Tolpuddle is not the most dramatic swimming spot in Dorset. But it is my home river, and there is something about swimming in a river called the Piddle that I find deeply satisfying on a level I cannot fully articulate.

**Practical notes for swimming dogs**

Always check water quality before swimming — the Environment Agency publishes bathing water quality data for designated bathing beaches. River swimming is generally safe in Dorset's chalk streams but avoid after heavy rain when water levels rise and currents strengthen. Blue-green algae can appear in still water in hot weather — if the water looks green or smells unusual, do not swim. Rinse your dog after sea swimming to remove salt from the coat.
